- Booking an Earth, Wind & Fire Tribute Band

Do you remember the 21st of September? Of course you do. Everybody does, which is exactly why Earth, Wind & Fire tribute bands are one of the most requested acts I get asked about, from corporate buyers to performing arts centers to people planning a 60th birthday party.

Maurice White put the band together in Chicago in 1969, and by the end of the ’70s the formula was set: Philip Bailey’s falsetto over White’s baritone, a horn section that could turn on a dime, and a rhythm section that made September, Shining Star, Let’s Groove, Boogie Wonderland and Fantasy sound like the whole party was in the room. Ninety million records later, EWF is in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, and September gets a new life on TikTok every fall.

The catch for anyone booking a tribute: this is an eight-to-thirteen-piece band’s worth of music. A five-piece with a keyboard patch standing in for the Phenix Horns is not an Earth, Wind & Fire tribute, it’s a wedding band playing September. The acts below carry real horns, at least two lead voices and a singer who can honestly live up in Bailey’s register. I’ve run ProTributeBands since 2011 and spent two tours as BOSTON’s guitarist and co-lead vocalist, so vocals and horn parts are the first things I listen for and the things most EWF tributes get wrong.

How the list is ordered: my roster act sits at #1, and after that it’s how much each band works, how current the footage is, and how faithfully they handle the vocals and the horn charts. Thirteen acts made it, from Atlanta to Las Vegas to Amsterdam.

## #1 – [Legacy & Groove](https://www.protributebands.com/legacy-and-groove/) (Atlanta, Georgia)

My pick for the [best Earth, Wind & Fire tribute band](https://www.protributebands.com/legacy-and-groove/) is Atlanta’s Legacy & Groove, and the reason is one man’s voice. Founder Ray Howard sings the Philip Bailey parts in Bailey’s actual range, not an octave down with a wink, and there are very few singers alive who can do that for two hours. Ray came up in Chicago, same as the original band, and toured as a background vocalist opening for Gerald Levert and Sounds of Blackness before building this show.

The band behind him is the Ray Howard Band, with Carl Breeding, a Grammy-winning producer and arranger, on keys. They’ve been at it since 2017, play 25 to 35 dates a year, and the 2026 calendar is theaters: the Historic Ritz Theatre in May, Tybee Post Theater and the Gem Theatre in August, two shows at MadLife Stage & Studios in October and the Griffin Opera House in November. Shows run 90 minutes to two hours and cover September, Shining Star, Let’s Groove, Boogie Wonderland, Fantasy, Sing a Song, Reasons, Getaway and After the Love Has Gone.

Legacy & Groove is the act I send to corporate buyers and PACs first, because they carry their own sound and lights and they’ve never once given me a reason to apologize. Book them through their [ProTributeBands page](https://www.protributebands.com/legacy-and-groove/).

## #2 – Let’s Groove Tonight (Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania)

Let’s Groove Tonight bills itself as “The Nation’s #1 Earth, Wind & Fire Tribute Band,” and they’ve got one thing nobody else on this list has: saxophonist Curtis Johnson toured with the original Earth, Wind & Fire, and he’s on every date. That matters more than it sounds. The horn phrasing on Sing a Song and Getaway is a dialect, and Curtis speaks it natively.

They’re a Pittsburgh band that works the whole country: a pre-Super Bowl show in Miami Beach, a Steelers pep rally at Stage AE, casinos and theaters from Florida to New York. The calendar through early 2027 has the Music Box in Cleveland, Dania Beach Casino, the Oaks Theater and City Winery in Pittsburgh, and the Sugarloaf Performing Arts Center in New York. Costume changes, choreography, and they’ll open with a Kool & the Gang set if you want a longer night. Smokey Robinson’s manager Bob Buzzelli said that with his eyes closed it sounds like the original band, and having heard them, I’m not going to argue with him.

## #3 – Al McKay’s Earth, Wind & Fire Experience

This one needs a disclaimer, because it isn’t a tribute band in the usual sense. Al McKay was Earth, Wind & Fire’s guitarist from 1973 to 1981 and co-wrote September, Best of My Love and Sing a Song. He went into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame with the band in 2000. So when he leads a 13-piece band through that catalog, he’s playing his own songs, and the guitar parts are the guitar parts.

The band’s whole pitch is “Pure Live”: no tracks, no loops, no click. Vocalists Tim Owens, DeVere Duckett and Claude Woods split the Bailey and White parts, and the players come out of some of the biggest R&B touring bands of the last 40 years. They work mostly overseas and on the big soul cruises: Java Jazz in 2026, the Ultimate Disco Cruise, the Soul Train Cruise in February 2027, and European festivals like Burghausen Jazz Week and Nisville, where the video above was shot. If your budget reaches this far and the date lines up, it’s the closest thing to the real band that exists. The site says plainly that it’s not affiliated with the official Earth, Wind & Fire, and I’d say the same.

## #4 – The Earth, Wind & Fire Tribute Band (Laurel, Maryland)

Generic name, serious band. The Earth, Wind & Fire Tribute Band out of Laurel, Maryland is a group of singers and players with gospel roots, which is the right place to come from if you’re going to sing Reasons in front of people who know it. They’ve played the Howard Theatre in D.C. and tour up and down the East Coast: the Reilly Arts Center in Ocala, the FSCJ Artist Series in Jacksonville, Cohoes Music Hall in New York in May 2026, the Pines Theater in Lufkin, Texas in September, and a Boca Black Box date already on sale for 2027.

They’re the tribute you’ll see most often on theater-series calendars in the Southeast, and the footage above, from Jacksonville, shows why: a full horn line, two lead voices trading, and a crowd that’s up by the second song. Booked through Ultra Artists.

## #5 – The Chicago Funk (Netherlands)

The Chicago Funk is a 13-piece Dutch band that calls itself the officially endorsed Earth, Wind & Fire tribute, and the show backs up the swagger. Three lead vocalists, David Gonçalves, Clayton Peroti and Clifton End, cover Bailey’s high notes, White’s warmth and Ralph Johnson’s parts, which is how the original band actually divided the work and something most tributes fudge with one singer.

They were runners-up on the Dutch TV series The Tribute: Battle of the Bands and toured Dutch theaters off the back of it. Costume changes are extravagant in the good way. They’re a Europe booking for most of my readers, but if you’re planning something in Amsterdam or Antwerp, this is the one.

## #6 – Kalimba: The Spirit of Earth, Wind & Fire (Seattle)

Kalimba is named for the African thumb piano Maurice White played on stage, and that’s the level of detail this Pacific Northwest band brings. It’s a 10-piece with a full horn section and rhythm section, built around the Bailey harmonies and the high notes rather than around the hits medley. The late Sheldon Reynolds, who sang and played guitar in Earth, Wind & Fire for 14 years, called Kalimba “the show that gets it right” out of thousands of bands trying to play this music. I can’t think of a better reference.

They’re a fixture in Washington and Oregon, from Muckleshoot Casino to summer amphitheater series like Rocky Pond Estate in September 2026, and they’ll travel for PACs and casino showrooms. Strong pick for the West Coast, where the EWF tribute field is thinner than it should be.

## #7 – Shining Star: A Tribute to Earth, Wind & Fire (Chicago)

Chicago’s own. Shining Star is an 11-piece that recreates the 1970s and ’80s show, the peak years, and they’ve been doing it long enough to sell out Freedom Hall in both 2023 and 2025, with a return already booked for November 7, 2026. They played the Beverly Arts Center last September and two nights at Zehnder’s in Frankenmuth, Michigan in May 2026.

The clip above is an outdoor show in Addison, Illinois from July 2026, which tells you the band is working right now. Vocals, lead guitar, bass, keys, drums, percussion and horns, all live. They’ll travel a long way from Chicago for the right date.

## #8 – Serpentine Fire (Las Vegas, Nevada)

Serpentine Fire is the busiest Earth, Wind & Fire tribute in Las Vegas, and that’s a competitive town. Founder Tyriq Johnson fronts it, and his falsetto is the reason the band exists. His earlier EWF show sold out the Astor Hotel and packed the Miller Stage at Summerfest, and this band has played hundreds of dates across the country, including symphony orchestra shows.

The 2026 run is all Vegas and Southern California: Pala Casino’s Starlight Theatre in August, the Smith Center in September and again in November, three nights at South Point in October, and Santa Fe Station in December. If you’re planning a corporate event in Las Vegas and want a band that doesn’t need a hotel, this is the call.

## #9 – Elements: The Ultimate Earth, Wind & Fire Tribute

Elements is a Northeast production, 11 or 12 pieces depending on the night, with a multimedia show running behind the band. They cover the catalog past the hits, into Can’t Hide Love and the deeper album cuts, and they’ve toured from New Hampshire to Florida, with dates at the Lyric Theatre in Stuart, Tarpon Arts and Flagler Auditorium.

What I like in the footage above is that the dance steps are the actual dance steps. A lot of tributes phone in the choreography because the music is hard enough. Elements does both.

## #10 – September In The Park (Illinois)

September In The Park is an Illinois band that does something specific: a double bill of Earth, Wind & Fire and Chicago, the two great horn bands from the same city, in one show. The horn charts are the whole point, and they’re tight. Their EWF medley above, Boogie Wonderland into Let’s Groove into Fantasy, has passed four million views, and the three-voice stack on the choruses is the giveaway that they’ve done the homework. A smart pick for a festival or a series that wants two catalogs for one fee.

## #11 – Leonid & Friends (Moscow, Russia)

Leonid & Friends is a Chicago tribute first, but their Earth, Wind & Fire videos are so good they belong here. Eleven Russian musicians led by Leonid Vorobyev, who transcribes every part by ear, and the studio videos have become the reference recordings for anyone learning this music. Their September has over 13 million views, Fantasy over 28 million, After the Love Has Gone over 20 million. They’ve done multiple sold-out U.S. tours and announced another for 2026.

You can’t book them as an EWF tribute for a corporate event, so treat this entry as the listening assignment. Put the video above on and hear what the vocal stack is supposed to sound like.

## #12 – Ultimate Earth Wind & Fire (United Kingdom)

The UK’s leading EWF tribute is a 12-piece drawn from London session players who’ve worked with Queen, Lionel Richie, Chaka Khan and Stevie Wonder. No tracks, no miming. Paul Young called it “a breathtaking performance,” and Jazz FM admitted they thought it was the real thing. They play the holiday-camp and festival circuit, Butlins included, and are the one to call for a British corporate date or a wedding on that side of the Atlantic.

## #13 – The Hindley Street Country Club (Adelaide, Australia)

The HSCC is a studio cover collective rather than a touring tribute, so it goes last, but their Earth, Wind & Fire videos have an audience most tribute bands would kill for: September near ten million views, Boogie Wonderland with the HSCC Bad Girls on backing vocals near nine and a half million, Fantasy at six million. The production is gorgeous and the singing is honest. If you’re in Adelaide, go see them. If you’re anywhere else, they’re the reason a lot of people discovered that this music is playable by humans.

## Booking an Earth, Wind & Fire Tribute Band

Two practical notes before you call anyone. First, count the players. Ten to thirteen musicians is the size of a real EWF tribute, which drives the fee, the hotel rooms and the stage plot, and [what a tribute band costs](https://www.protributebands.com/how-much-do-tribute-bands-cost/) scales with headcount more than with fame. Second, ask what the band carries. Legacy & Groove travels with sound and lights, which is why they’re so easy for [corporate events](https://www.protributebands.com/tribute-bands-for-corporate-events/); a theater act like Elements or Serpentine Fire assumes the venue has production.

If you’re still deciding between acts, my guide to [choosing the right tribute band](https://www.protributebands.com/how-to-choose-the-right-tribute-band-for-your-event/) covers the questions I’d ask. And if you want the short version: talk to [Legacy & Groove](https://www.protributebands.com/legacy-and-groove/) first, and tell Ray I sent you.
