Journey might be the ultimate arena band of its era: Lovin', Touchin', Squeezin', Open Arms, Wheel in the Sky, and a power ballad called Don't Stop Believin' that refuses to die. The band formed in San Francisco in 1973, broke through when Steve Perry arrived for 1978's Infinity, and put out Escape in 1981, still one of the best-selling rock albums ever made. Perry's tenor covers close to four octaves, and finding tribute vocalists who can honestly sing it is the whole game. Lead singer Hugo Valenti looks and sounds uncannily like Steve Perry. Before VOYAGE he fronted Valentine, which debuted on Warner Brothers in 1990. The rest of the band is heavy hitters. What I like: the vocalist handles the upper register without shouting, and the band plays the arrangements as recorded rather than bar-band versions. Tight rhythm section, real harmony vocals, and a singer who doesn't oversell Perry. They bill themselves as the World's Greatest Tribute to Journey, and the renditions are accurate enough to defend the claim. Lead vocalist Juan del Castillo started voice training at three and was working theaters at nine. Guitarist Roger Cain is the brother of Journey's Jonathan Cain, who joined the real band in 1980 and co-wrote Don't Stop Believin' and Open Arms. That family connection is an authentic touch you can't fake, and I point it out to clients who want extra credibility for an event. Scotty Kormos, Tony Love and Henry O'Neill have filled out the rhythm section.
